Stories of Strangers
Drawings and Mixed Media on Paper
Rose Hawker graduated in 2007 with a BA in Fine Art from the University of Plymouth. Both during the course and after, she exhibited as part of a trio, who experimented with a host of mediums from photography to bookmaking, performance to installation. However, from a young age she has always drawn, and finds pencil the medium she returns to most.
This series of images, her first solo exhibition, is based on a collection of family photographs dating from the early 1900’s to the 1960’s. They are simple snapshots, whose aim is nothing more than to create a memory. These memories are now lost but in her work Rose looks to bring new meaning to the forgotten photographs.
‘I have always created work where narrative is key. The stories are sometimes true, sometimes false, sometimes other people’s and sometimes my own. I like to start with a simple photograph and by displacing the subjects from their original context, using colour and scale, I create my own narrative and history surrounding these people.
I like to imagine the situation it was taken in, what the subjects were thinking about or looking at. I try to see more than what is there.’
