Peter Hawksby

I studied at  Hull College of Art, followed by 2 years post graduate MA studies at the Slade School of Art, 1970-72

Throughout my teaching career I have taught Drawing, Fine Art and Photography to A Level. Working mostly part time, I have been able to carry on with my own work, renting studios from the Space Studio Organization in Hackney, London, for 16 of those years.

My active interest is in painting and the dominant theme of my study has been based on sketches of rock pools. I would say that in recent years the preoccupations within this theme have been best facilitated by working in black and white as it is the rhythmic structures that interest me most. The evolution of the image is towards an abstraction based on the marks used and the surface of the object to engender a direct emotional response. The current works are all on Indian hand-made paper as I feel that this suits the calligraphic quality I like and the physicality I want.

Painters who have influenced me include Willem De Kooning, Howard Hodgkin, Trevor Bell and Sandra Blow. I also have a strong affinity with Chinese traditional painting. I would say that it is the continuing study of the painting tradition rather than the conceptual evolution of Art that matters more to me.
